Interview: Turbonegro’s Tony Sylvester aka “The Duke of Nothing” on Being the New Guy, Their New Album and Hardcore

November 20th, 2012

They might not be a household name with mainstream audiences, but Norway’s Turbonegro have quietly assembled a small army of underground support for themselves. Heading towards their 25th year together as a band, the group has long carved out a dedicated, diehard fan base through a unique and confrontational look and style of music. Self-styling themselves as “deathpunk” and having almost accidentally built a worldwide fanclub of sorts known as Turbojugend, the band has returned with a vengeance. Now, they’re back with a new singer—their first since longtime vocalist Hank von Helvete departed—named Tony Sylvester (his moniker is The Duke of Nothing). Having just released an excellent new album called Sexual Harassment, we were thrilled to speak with Sylvester a mere hour before their festival closing spot at this year’s FYF Fest.

Feel the Noise – FYF Fest Day 2 at LA State Historic Park (Review, Photos and More)

September 4th, 2012

Day 1 of FYF Fest 2012 showcased the best that post-hardcore had to offer. Day 2 was divided between a litany of noise rock acts and a smattering of some of the brightest rising stars in indie rock. Noise rock is tough to execute in a live setting, and the second day’s acts didn’t all succeed with the flying colors of the previous day’s reunited hardcore bands. On the other hand, the top-notch indie talent present–normally an overly bloated blast of hype—proved with flying colors the acclaim is all well deserved.

Turbonegro – Sexual Harassment

June 14th, 2012

Turbo

A Hostile Smirk Environment

The metalsphere is loaded with American bands trying to sound like their Scandanavian counterparts, chiefly in the realm of deathcore and other violently loud genres. Turbonegro is the opposite—a Norwegian punk-metal five-piece with roots in American and British hardcore.
