Above & Beyond Acoustic, Live at The Greek

If anyone has ever made the argument that DJs are musicians too, it was the trio of Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness, and Paavo Siljamäki (a.k.a. Above & Beyond) this past weekend. They took a vision that was born four years ago in a hot air balloon and made it a reality, live on stage at the historic Greek Theater. The nearly 6,000-seat venue was packed to the brim with a fidgety audience in attendance to witness a spectacle that might not happen again anytime soon, at least according to Grant when he exclaimed, “We don’t know if this will happen again, so thank you!” to an ecstatic Los Angeles crowd. With a 2014 album confirmed to be in the works, it would not be a surprise to see a few downtempo acoustic songs make it on to the final cut (said McGuiness), especially based on how polished their live performances were this weekend. Nestled among the trees of The Greek Theatre, Brooklyn based The National played the first of two sold-out Los Angeles shows. Earlier this year, we reviewed the 5th album in Elbow’s phenomenal 20 year career. While topping the charts in the UK, the band have yet to break the elusive American market. On Saturday night, the British rock quintet played a two hour show at The Greek, and it was fantastic to see how big the crowd was. Read more…

Silversun Pickups, Against Me!, and Henry Clay People: Live at The Greek, Los Angeles, 8/6/10

August 11th, 2010

The Greek is one of my favorite music venues in LA. It’s like going to a smaller, more intimate Hollywood Bowl. It’s almost magical inside the theater, surrounded by trees and fairy lights. It was a great setting for a homecoming show for the Silversun Pickups. They have a great energy about them and I’m glad I got to see them again as a headline band and playing more of their songs.
