Photos: Culture Collide Sunday Block Party

January 3rd, 2013

It’s an unspoken rule of most music festivals: Sunday’s the day to let it all hang out. When security’s lapsed and staff is tough to track down, it means the run’s been good, and the folks that made it happen have let their hair down – just in time to fully indulge in the final hours of their handiwork.

Class Actress @ the Echo 2/9

January 18th, 2012

For whoever said the original can never be outdone, meet Brooklyn-based Class Actress. After Elizabeth Harper heard producer Mark Richardson’s remix of a song on her solo album Elizabeth Harper, she decided she liked it better than the original – so much so that she wanted to collaborate with him on every song thereafter. They met multi-instrumentalist/producer Scott Rosenthal a short while after, and the rest is sweet, synthy history.

They’re playing a show at the Echo on February 9, and I couldn’t think of a better way to spend the 5th night before Valentines Day – which, let’s be honest, is usually the night that dread about the fateful 14th starts to creep in and those unfortunate souls not in a loving and/or committed relationship start to feel a growing sense of desperation and woe. Ahem.

That being said, a Class Actress show seems to be the perfect remedy- you’ll be way too distracted by their cheeky songs to notice any feelings of growing panic. And who knows, maybe you’ll even meet the perfect companion for the 14th at the show…wishful thinking perhaps, but one can hope.  Cheers!

Class Actress Live at Lipsick 24 Austin BFFs Day party SXSW

March 16th, 2011

Elizabeth Harper and her dance pop band Class Actress came next back at the Austin BFF’s day party. The limited music released by them so far is strong, but unfortunately their live show doesn’t quite measure up to their potential. Harper emotes like her 80s favorites, but it’s more swinging posing than real dancefloor inducing fury at this point.

Class Actress at the Echo [Los Angeles, November 5, 2010]

November 16th, 2010

Elizabeth Harper and Scott Rosenthal of Class Actress brought their unique, sedate brand of electro-pop to LA’s Echo on November 5. Opening for fellow Brooklyn band Small Black, Harper seemed comfortable performing in the small venue. After all, she started out singing and playing acoustic guitar in New York coffeehouses. Class Actress is heavily influenced by ’80s pop, specifically Depeche Mode and Madonna. Their sound was sparse – little more than Harper’s vocals and Rosenthal’s work on the keyboards – but Harper injected it with restrained passion. The group released an album in February, entitled Journal of Ardency. Read more…
