It’s hard to think of anyone with more soul than Charles Bradley, a former James Brown impersonator who cut his first original record for Daptone at the age of 62. On his second LP, Victim of Love, the screaming eagle of soul spreads his wings and soars through another collection of timeless tunes with the assistance of the Menahan Street Band. If you make it out to see him, expect to laugh, cry and dance.

A Piece of the Past Into the Modern Age
We live in a paradoxical culture of nostalgia. “Things were so much better back in {fill-in-the-blank},” we say – when at the time, we complained about how much everything sucked. Through Buzzfeed articles and YouTube playlists, we gather ye round to reminisce on the daily about the long-lost loves of our past – Crystal Pepsi, Full House, the Delia’s catalog. Every generation has the same primary nostalgic complaint: “Music was just so much better back then.”

Rolling Stone has just announced another solid SXSW event. For their 2013 edition, they’ve dubbed their events the Rolling Stone Rock Room. This year’s events take place at La Zona Rosa on Friday March 15th and Saturday March 16th. There is no RSVP and the events do appear to be free, but to be 100% clear, thus far they haven’t formally clarified if it’s completely open to the public or SXSW registrants. That being said, they are offering all-day eats from the Peached Tortilla Truck Friday and all-day BBQ on Saturday. The lineup features Charles Bradley featuring the Menahan Street Band, Chelsea Light Moving, Eric Burdon, Fitz and the Tantrums, Surfer Blood and more. Get the full details after the jump.

The 2012 version of I’ll Be Your Mirror USA—All Tomorrow’s Parties’ grand urban festival experiment on the Lower East Side of New York City—continued on Saturday, September 22. The roster promised the weekend’s largest selection of performers and activities, including curator Greg Dulli and his partners in The Afghan Whigs. If ever there was a time for this particular incarnation of IBYM to step up and maintain ATP’s rep as a harbinger of good taste, to rock the party and bring the party to rock, this was probably it. It was another beautiful Sunday in Los Angeles and the latest installment of KCRW’s World Music Festival at the Hollywood Bowl is in the books. This time, rather than a selection of three or four great bands, the event featured a house band led by the Tonight Show with Jay Leno’s Rickey Minor and a revolving door of top-notch singers. Most importantly, this lineup promised a prominent inclusion from the legendary likes of Stevie Wonder. With only a few minor exceptions, the roster of talent was stupendous for this show, dubbed Global Soul with Rickey Minor, Stevie Wonder and Friends. Read more…
