Against Me! is a punk rock band from Florida, that formed in 1997 by singer and guitarist Laura Grace. Since 2002, the band’s line up has included Jame Bowman (guitar) and Andrew Seward (bass). After releasing three studio albums through independent record labels, Against Me! singed to Sire Records for their 2007 album, New Wave.
New Wave reached number 57 on the Billboard 200. Their fifth album, White Crosses, was released in 2010. The album was their most successful release reaching number 34 on the Billboard 200. In 2011, the band launched their own record label, Total Treble Music, through which they planned to release future albums. In 2012, lead singer Laura Grace came out as a transgender, and began the transition of life as a woman. The band finished their sixth studio album, Transgender Dysphoria Blues, during the summer of 2013, and released the album in the beginning of this year.
The Rolling Stone rated Transgender Dysphoria Blues three-and-a-half stars, and called it “a series of bracing songs about a self-destructive girl in a boy’s body…it takes balls to come out this way, in this genre.”

The following year they released Crime as Forgiven by Against Me!. Their third EP, an acoustic record, included Grace and Dustin Fridkin on bass. The Gaslight Anthem have announced the upcoming release of their fifth album, Get Hurt. The follow up to 2012’s Handwritten will drop on August 19. And fans of the band will be happy to hear that they have also announced a tour in support of the new release. The fall tour will arrive in Philly on September 12th when The Gaslight Anthem performs at The Mann. Accompanying them on the Skyline Stage will be openers Against Me! and Jimmy Eat World. We definitely lucked out, because Jimmy Eat World are only scheduled to appear at two of the shows on the tour, ours and the Jersey stop the following day.
The Gaslight Anthem themselves hail from New Jersey. They formed back in 2006 and released their debut album, Sink or Swim, in 2006. Just this week, they finally released the first track of their newest, and fifth studio album. You can listen to the single “Rollin’ and Tumblin’” here. Lead singer, Brian Fallon, promised us back in May that we could expect something “completely different than [they have] ever done before” with the new album. He said, ” Instead of going that extra step of just adding some organ or some background vocals, this time we actually really changed up a lot of the sounds.” Stay tuned for more when the album is released in August.
As mentioned, those who arrive early will be treated to opening sets from Against Me! and Jimmy Eat World. Against Me! have been steadily touring on their own for much of the year. They’ll be touring throughout July and August with Philly’s own Creepoid as well as Jenny Owen Youngs. Against Me! released their sixth studio album, Transgender Dysmorphia Blues in January of this year. The album is their first since lead singer, Laura Jane Grace, came out as a transgender woman. Fellow openers, Jimmy Eat World, released their eighth studio album in 2013. Damage has been described as “an attempt at making an adult breakup record.” Formed in 1993, Jimmy Eat World surely has a large collection of music to pull from when they take the stage this fall. Head to The Mann this September to hear all of these great bands on the same stage!

Against Me! has released a new music video to compliment the song, “Drinking With the Jocks”. And, it’s intense. The song itself is a commentary on the nuances of contemporary gender politics, and challenges the stereotypical views on masculinity.

Against Me! is back with a new video off of their two-month-old album, Transgender Dysphoria Blues. The nearly three and a half minute visualization of “Black Me Out” is a shadowy, aggressive version of the track that tells its story through cut-out letters and gritty black and white cartoonish images.

There’s no party like a SPIN party, with free BBQ, breakfast and booze at perhaps one of the coolest venues in Austin: the iconic Stubb’s. Openers Radkey approached their set like a playful eight-year-old presented with a fresh can of spray paint. Just about every track was prefaced by frontman Dee Radke saying exactly what the song was about, moving his mouth from mischievous grin to hard-edged lyrics as an ouroboros of a line of folks awaiting free BBQ nodded to the beat. The band of brothers won over a lot of fans with their all-too-brief set, only to be evenly matched straight across Stubb’s by The Orwells.

We couldn’t have a SXSW season without the excellent yearly party thrown by SPIN at Stubb’s BBQ. For those lucky enough to attend, this is always one of the best lineups, the best in terms of space to move around and the best in terms of “holy crap” cool. This year is no different, and SPIN has corralled a who’s who of the best acts headed up by Against Me!, Cloud Nothings and Warpaint. The RSVP was temporarily opened, but then closed. We’ll keep you posted if they re-open it or any contests come up for passes.
