1996 Forever

After making it just in time to catch The Prodigy jumping into their hit "Firestarter" the wind in the Coachella valley grew considerably. The Prodigy could be seriously considered as a kind of crunk-electronica. Crunktronica if you will. It's electronic music that without necessarily using electric guitars grows angrily as it proceeds. The bloops and bleeps and bass drops land with more ferocity than your average dance act. Liam Howlett (and yes Keith Flint and Maxim) brought the set to a solid close on the strength of their anthem "Smack My Bitch Up." The flailing electronic melodies hit harder in person than the song would suggest from an average stereoplay. It's an experience for sure.

Don't Call It A Comeback

There is a harsh wind blowing through this valley.

Nine Inch Nails absolutely rocked the Main Stage leading up to it's new album With Teeth. An overwhelming see of people had gathered for this set. From the mere second Trent Reznor and company took the stage they owned this crowd. Trent's voice sounds flawless. As good as on any record. The set opened with "The Wretched" from The Fragile and skipped around through an endless pile of material. The clearly well rehearsed group made the best of old favorites like "Wish" and "Closer" while adding new enigmatic charm to "Piggy" and the unforgettable "Terrible Lie." Awesome in their addition to the setlist were the rarities "Suck" (from the very end of Broken) and the acid burn screaming fury of "Burn." In a masterful set filled new greats and old classics, the showstopper was none other than "Hurt." A slightly quieter rendition, the song is terrifyingly beautiful in its honesty. The show ended with the raw power of "Head Like A Hole" and "The Hand That Feeds" the latter of which ended in the group smashing their instruments in a rage. Seriously, two hours more of this would've been fine by me.

New Order brought their best to the Main Stage, playing an early number of songs from Waiting For The Sirens' Call then shifting into the classics of their catalog. Most notably, Joy Division's "Atmosphere," "Regret" and the serene "Bizarre Love Triangle." The songs placing the best response amidst the crowd were "Crystal" and the titanic "Blue Monday." All that has been said of the song is true. There is something insanely majestic about hearing it in person. It has an otherworldy feeling of importance.

Z-Trip greeted the sunset with a testament to the viability and future of turntablism. Z had the Gobi Tent full in the early evening and scatched his way through an eye opening amount of music. The first song in Z-Trip brought out Busdriver to do his part in the song "Take Two Copies." Then through the rest of his set, Z-Trip deftly and nimbly cut his way through a plethora of genres. Here's a short list of the songs he played: "Oh Lord Won't You Buy Me A Mercedes Benz," "Show Me How To Live," "What I Say," "The Stroke," "Mama Said Knock You Out," "Bohemian Rhapsody," "For What It's Worth," "TNT," "I Can Tell That We Are Going To Be Friends" and "Testify." Through each moment the crowd was enthused, ecstatic and generally just having a good time. Z showed finesse, courage and confidence well enough to establish him as a new heavyweight in turntablism. For the finale he brought out Chester Bennington as a surprise guest to do the aforementioned "Walking Dead" from Z-Trip's new album Shifting Gears.

Back at the Sahara Tent Miss Kittin was splicing portions of last year's headliner Kraftwerk's "Musique Non-Stop" in with a sample stating "Mix beats with hip-hop." All in attendance standing were dancing. Some just bobbed heads, some did whole body freak outs and even others still did a rave-skip. Miss Kittin seemed to enjoy the music as much as any person on the floor as she danced her way through a variety of material. She spun a dance version of the Sex Pistols' "Anarchy In The U.K." that she boogied to, wisely leaving the song intact to play through the duration. Occasionally she would take the mic and sing a few lines to accompany the hard beats, at one point singing "You've got / The fusion" with a heavy delay effect.

Kasabian Goes Godzilla

Kasabian tore the roof off the Mojave Tent like a behemoth monster no one ever expected. I swear nearly 75 percent of the total Coachella crowd today was present to see their set. The band's electro influenced rock got the crowd moving. The real key to their effectiveness was the vocal harmonies by the 2 singers. In a less aggro way, the combination of their 2 tones is reminiscent of the allure of Alice In Chains in their prime. This is no grunge, however. This is danceable rock and roll without the obvious gimmicky approach many bands take. This vocal concoction makes for a unique vocal style.

Kasabian played this wonderful style laying it forth in songs such as "LSF" and "Processed Beats." Their set ended with the superb "Club Foot" which had the crowd in a frenzy of movement. Out of anyone this year or last year, this is the band I could see headlining Coachella down the line.

Jem gathered about 5 times the number of people of the last act at the Outdoor Theatre. In addition to the fact that she is gorgeous, she has a voice that seems to float with the air. It glides up, through and then past you with a cool shiver. Jem backed her by a full band with live instrumentation played songs from her album Finally Woken including "Wish I," "Save Me" and the late Bill Hicks "Just A Ride." The large capacity audience was treated to faithful renditions of the sample driven "They" and rocking "Twenty Four." As well as her own immensely impressive material Jem did 2 covers. The funk ska of Stevie Wonder's "Master Blaster (Jammin')" and a tear-jerking understated rendition of Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed." A phenomenal set from top to bottom.

In The Eye Of The Beholder

Midday at the Main Stage the Perceptionists spit slick rhymes. Mr. Lif and Akrobatic kept it simple focusing on constant sound delivery, no bells or whistles. The two used this straightforward approach in crowd pleasing lines like "Where are the weapons of mass destruction" in one such politically charged song. As strong a showing as it was, this has to be the least people viewing a show at the main stage yet. In general the crowd is far less then yesterday.

The sun once again high in the sky didn't deter Donovan Frankenreiter's set. Donovan compelled a surprisingly modest sized crowd to dance with his breezy cool delivery. The tunes played including "Free," "Stay Young" and the joyous "It Don't Matter." After one uncharacteristic song featuring a distorted electric guitar Donovan and his band finished off the set with an extended jam featuring a solo from every member.
