Portland-based Portugal. The Man has been playing indie-pop since 2006, and they’re getting pretty good at it. Their recent Coachella performance was reviewed as timeless; amidst the setting sun an exultant string section along with on par falsetto vocals from bassist Zachary Carothers made for some heart wrenching for those most devoted fans. And, of course, a sing-along to a few covers, too – never underestimate to greatness of a performance when you find yourself in a crowd of a few thousand people all singing the same tune. Their 8th album, Evil Friends, will be released June 4th.

No band plays psych-rock like Japan’s Acid Mother’s Temple. Few guitarists can shred like Kawabata Makoto. And few bands possess the intuitive companionship between members that always results in a great performance. Born in 1995 with a purpose of ‘extreme trip music’ the band was dubbed a soul collective and featured many musicians dedicated to experimental and free-form music. Many incarnations later and a core four piece has held the name for the past few years, playing improvised space-rock with American psych rock, drone and world music elements. They play unforgettable concerts, and are known to have some of the best psychedelic art posters.

Blues-folk singer Trixie Whitley graces the stage with one of the most unforgettable voices many venues have heard in years. Albeit 25, her music career spans most of her life. As daughter of legendary blues singer-songwriter Chris Whitley she was touring the world before she could speak and began performing with theater companies at age 11, also becoming one of Europe’s youngest resident DJ’s at age 14. In 2008 she visited Berklee School of Music to collaborate with producer Daniel Lanois (Brian Eno, U2, Neil Young) and soon, along with drummer Brian Blade (Joni Mitchell, Wayne Shorter) and bassist Daryl Johnson (Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan), became the vocalist of the super group, Black Dub. Her debut album, Fourth Corner, explores a range of human emotion in utter love, total rage, unadulterated happiness, and crippling loneliness. Hear the fire in her voice at the Chapel on June 1st.

It’s been 15 years since the debut release of the UK post-punk revival/noise band Clinic. Their 8th studio album, Free Reign II signals a possible new era for a cult band who’s always teetered on the edge of mainstream. It’s a remix album of their 2012 album, Free Reign, in which the loose-lipped lyrics remind us now of The Black Angels and experimental compositions and unusual sounds paint a surreal landscape as the album unfolds. Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) added his assistance to engineering the album and we are left hearing Clinic without a muddled lo-fi blanket but with clear edges and full layers. As far as remix albums go, it’s not entirely different than the original, it hasn’t been turned into an electronic album, and it is pretty damn good.

Until the Quiet Comes, Flying Lotus‘ 3rd album on Warp Records came out last October. Voted best new music, the elegant, melodic, and distinct album will finally bring Steven Ellison on the road. His most extensive tour yet he plans to venture across North America, UK, and Europe for 3 months. The electronic producer has increasingly gained critical acclaim since his first album in 2006. He brings experimental to hip-hop and dance, and a killer light show and presence to the stage.
