Nick Oliveri to be Vocalist for Track on Upcoming Queens Of The Stone Age Album

They’re getting the old band back together. Over five years since Era Vulgaris, the still-unnamed upcoming album by stoner gods Queens of the Stone Age, famously set to include Dave Grohl on drums, is now expected to feature a one-track return by Nick Oliveri, the longtime QOTSA alum ousted shortly after the band’s 2004 release, Songs for the Deaf.

In a recent Facebook post from the official page of Oliveri’s side project, Mondo Generator, the news was broken in a tidy update, along with a mention of his reunion with like-minded veteran group Kyuss, re-dubbed Kyuss Alive!

The post read:

NEWS: Nick has re-joined Kyuss, and has recently recorded his vocals on a new Queens of the Stone Age song! Stay tuned.

The troubled bassist–vocalist, whose raspy screams were the perfect foil to QOTSA frontman Josh Homme’s dispassionate croon, was kicked out of the band due to a reputation for erratic behavior, excessive partying and bouts of domestic abuse that finally culminated in a hostage-taking standoff. Amid felony charges of domestic violence and cocaine possession, Oliveri managed to negotiate a deal with prosecutors, sparing him a possible 15-year jail time in exchange for three years’ probation.

Along with a repentant Oliveri, QOTSA’s long-awaited sixth album is due to be a star-studded affair. Friend of the band Trent Reznor, whose track for Era Vulgaris only appeared on the album’s UK incarnation, will be guesting with a new contribution. Whether it’s behind the microphone or just the switchboard is to be determined. As mentioned above, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl will be manning the drums once again, over 10 years since his hard-hitting session on Songs for the Deaf.

Whether other drummer and solo artist Mark Lanegan will be making a cameo, as well as any other QOTSA friend, remains to be seen. But as with the many guest spots of Era Vulgaris, it’s fairly safe to expect more star credits to surface as the as-yet unnamed LP approaches its early 2013 release date.
