That Kid’s Got The Blues

Canadian turntablist Kid Koala’s latest release, 12 Bit Blues, takes his skills down to the muddy banks of the Mississippi, giving us his interpretation of the blues. Known for his unique and sometimes obscure sample selections, Kid Koala stays pretty close to the genre on this one. At moments, 12 Bit Blues sounds reminiscent of Moby’s Play, but only in theme. Kid Koala’s signature turntable techniques are unmistakable here.

“The kid is in rare form tonight,” are the lyrics that start off the album and may be taken as a bit of foreshadowing. The first track “1 Bit Blues (10,000 Miles)” gives the listener a not-so-subtle introduction of the journey Kid Koala plans on taking us. Filled with bluesy guitar licks, gritty vocals, and a shuffling drum track that says things are off to a wonderful start. On “9 Bit Blues” Kid Koala deconstructs the blues guitar scale. The instruments are sparser on this track than on the majority of the album. The lack of layers give the guitar and harmonica room to breathe, and allow the notes to ring in the empty space. This track encompasses the melancholy feelings usually associated with the blues, and after listening, one might need a stiff drink and a moment to remind themselves that things will be okay.

12 Bit Blues is yet another fine album from Kid Koala, and would serve as a great introduction to those not familiar with him. If you are a fan of the blues, this album definitely does it justice. 12 Bit Blues stays pretty close to the roots of the genre, Kid Koala just adds some spice to the recipe.
