After Pussy Riot was convicted of “hooliganism driven by religious hatred” and sentenced to two years in prison, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has decided that this sentence has been unproductive and is calling for the release of the Russian punk band.pussy riot
As was mentioned in previous mxdwn articles Two Members of Pussy Riot Imprisoned in Russian Prison, Two More Flee Country and Pussy Riot Appeals Conviction After Sentenced To Two Years, after a public display opposing the Russian government, Pussy Riot members were sentenced to two years in prison. According to Pitchfork, Pussy Riot has already been detained for five months and is now serving their two year sentence. However, now their case is up for appeal on October 1st and the Russian Prime Minister Medvedev has openly said that the members of the band should be released. His reasoning for this decision is that this sentence has been unproductive and has caused more uproar than it has caused good. Medvedev said he was sickened by the actions of the members of the band and by the hysteria that has ensued after their conviction. For now the fate of the band members is unsure but the public is currently raising money for their legal defense by selling a Pussy Riot eBook.
