Last month we reported that Buzz Media purchased SPIN magazine and were planning on expanding its online media market. It now looks like the magazine’s print is completely in jeopardy as they announced the cancellation of the November/December edition. In a statement Buzz Media said: “Buzzmedia and Spin are committed to moving forward with print, but we are still determining exactly how print fits in with Spin’s multiple distribution points and growth initiatives.”

SPIN has been in print for almost thirty years and this announcement comes as a significant metaphorical change in how we view media. With the abilities to stream songs instantly the accessibility of printed music media is becoming irrelevant. Over the last few years SPIN’s printed numbers had decreased dramatically and with its transition to becoming a bi-monthly magazine last year there were signs that change was coming.

Buzz Media also owns Stereogum, Hype Machine and Idolator. It is yet to be seen how they intend to use SPIN to differentiate from their already established websites. SPIN itself has established name value so Buzz Media must find a way to hold onto the value of the 30 year music publication source. Buzz Media has already cut a third of SPIN’s staff including the editor in chief.
