A Great Awakening
Brooklyn duo The Big Sleep come back from a three-year hibernation with their third LP Nature Experiments, released this month on Frenchkiss Records. Although guitarist/vocalist Danny Barria laments “we tried to work it out, we tried to tell a tale, but we failed” on album opener “#1,” The Big Sleep have done anything but fail on Nature Experiments.

Zola Jesus is the stage name for the beautiful voice wielding Nika Roza Danilova. Mixing elements of classical with electronic, and experimental, her music creates landscapes of pure black, and eery sweet. She has an opera background, and her vocals are positively haunting. She really doesn’t sound like anything out there, and when mixed with the cinematic synths, the experience is truly original. In an interview with The L.A. Record, Nika commented on her own philosophy, since she has studied it, saying “I believe in not avoiding things you’re afraid of. Especially really dark things.” We agree. Watch Ms. Zola Jesus do her uber dark, dark, dark things in the way of musical stylings, and you too won’t want to avoid them. “Come to the dark side…” sorry we couldn’t resist.

Dancing Like There’s No Tomorrow
Cheeky indie-poppers Imperial Teen have a simple request for you, encapsulated in their fifth album’s name: Feel the Sound. The San Francisco-based group, which counts Faith No More’s Roddy Bottum among its members, aren’t so young anymore—the band celebrate their sweet 16 this year—but you wouldn’t know it from this album, full of exuberant electro-pop and bursting with irresistible energy. There’s no teenage melodrama or melancholia here, only a dedication to songs that make you want to sing along (and maybe even dance). Read more…
