Garbage has returned after a seven-year hiatus to drop a new album sometime in spring 2012. The as-of-yet untitled album is being recorded in a basement in the Atwater Village area of Los Angeles, CA., and is being produced by the band, engineered by Billy Bush, and being mixed by Butch Vig and Billy Bush, whom have worked together on mixes for Beck and Alanis Morsette, among other artists.

The band posted this spooky-sounding teaser video of new material on its Facebook page last month:

This album will be their fifth studio release since their self-titled debut released in 1995, which produced the hit singles “Stupid Girl” as well as “Only Happy When It Rains”. Garbage also earned the band double platinum status in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

“We are making a record filled with music we want to hear,” the band members, consisting of Shirley Manson on lead vocals and guitar, Steve Marker on guitars and keyboards, Duke Erikson on guitars and keyboards and Butch Vig on drums and loops, said in a press release. “The new songs have been more inspired by what we haven’t been hearing rather than what we have.”

“Years-worth of pent-up music came out in some bizarre ways-bleary cell phone memos became real songs, conversations turned into lyrics, and new computer gizmos inspired wicket tangents,” the band continued. “Ghosts came in, had their say. Everyone brought ideas, and everyone fought in their corner. At the end of the day it all gets shoved through the four-way brain filter that is Garbage and it ends up sounding like nobody else. Red feathers and black tar.”
