Don Kirshner Passes Away at 76

Legendary rock promoter and producer Don Kirshner, famous for bringing acts like Bruce Springsteen, The Ramones, Pink Floyd and Kiss to the masses, passed away Monday in Boca Raton, FL due to heart failure at the age of 76.

Born in the Bronx, Kirshner quickly rose to his future moniker of “The Man With the Golden Ear” after his start with the legendary Bobby Darin, the voice behind the 1958 hit “Splish Splash.”  Shortly after the success of Darin’s tune, Kirshner his publishing company, Aldon.

Aldon was the label behind bubblegum pop artists like Carol King and Gerry Goffin, The Monkees, The Archies and Neil Sedaka.

In addition to running a massively influential label, Kirshner also produced and hosted the ABC-run “Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert.”  His program brought acts like Lynard Skynard, the Rolling Stones and David Bowie to television from 1973-1981.

Kirshner is survived by his children Ricky and Darny, his wife Sheila and five grandchildren.
