Arcade Fire’s “The Suburbs” Debuts At #1 on Billboard 200
August 11th, 2010
In 2007, Arcade Fire’s sophomore LP Neon Bible debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart. Now, three years later, the band can finally claim the #1 spot, as their new album The Suburbs bowed atop the charts this week. The Suburbs sold 156,000 copies, becoming the third independently-released album this year to top the charts, joining Vampire Weekend’s Contra and the compilation Hope For Haiti Now. Neon Bible sold 92,000 copies in its first week on shelves in 2007.
Also of note: According to Billboard, 62% of the album’s sales came courtesy of digital downloads, compared with just 30% of Neon Bible’s three years ago.
