Vibe Magazine, one of America’s leading music magazines, is closing down. According to Media Decoder, Chief of Vibe Media Group, Steve Aaron, wrote a memo to staff blaming suffering advertising sales for the magazine’s inability to stay afloat. The magazine was originally started by musician Quincy Jones in 1993, then called Time Warner Vibe. Later it sold to the Wicks Group in 2006. Circulation reached 818,000 during the second half of 2008. Read more…

I usually refrain from personal commentary on mxdwn. In fact, rarely does any mxdwn writer use the site as a sounding board for personal point-of-view. However, the sad passing of the music industry’s appropriately monikered “King of Pop” Michael Jackson warrants words out of the ordinary. His passing was untimely and unexpected, as the man himself was undergoing a concerted effort to rebuild and relaunch his career, one that had been beset by constant controversy and rampant speculation. According to multiple sources, the King of Pop passed away today, June 25, 2009.
He was pronounced dead by doctors at the UCLA Medical Center after arriving in a deep coma. Jackson is said to have suffered cardiac arrest and was not breathing when paramedics rushed to his place of residence just after 12pm this afternoon. CPR was performed and he was transported to the hospital. Doctors were unable to resuscitate him from his coma.

Denmark’s Roskilde Festival has just announced that one-day tickets are now available for the four day event. The festival, which runs from July 2-5, is still selling full festival packages for 265 Euros (est. $369.5) but daily rates are 110 Euros (est. $153.5). The festival has 200 acts slated to perform including Kanye West, Coldplay, Faith No More and Slipknot.
