Conscious Knock Out

Boston boasts deserving champions as the Celtics have proven, but there’s one more contender in an entirely different game. Underground rapper Akrobatik’s second album Absolute Value melts conscious rhymes, battle-ready verses, classic East Coast production, and a slew of legendary guests in a hip-hop pot of much deserved props. Akrobatik delivers like an early Xzibit, but spreads the knowledge a la Immortal Technique. Read more…

Sex-O Olympic-O a Wrap

June 27th, 2008

Al Jourgensen, one of the founding members of The Revolting Cocks, RevCo for short, has declared their upcoming album, Sex-O Olympic-O the best album he has ever done. Set for release on October 14, 2008, Jourgensen said that this is the first CD that he had no complaints about subsequent to leaving the mastering studio.

The Sex-O Olympic-O line up of RevCo includes Josh Bradford on vocals, Sin Quirin on guitar, and Clayton Worbeck on keyboards. However, prior to the elation after leaving the studio, this album was supposed to be RevCo’s last. After hearing the first few tracks, Jourgensen decided to keep the group going with younger members, as long as they turn it over to the next generation after five years. The one requirement for an aspiring member? They must capture the “true essence and spirit of being a Revolting *****,” according to Jourgensen.

The album will feature songs with a variety of themes, but the influence of booze and strip clubs will be heard on a number of tracks.

RevCo will announce plans for an extensive tour soon. Read more…

Real Guitar Heroes

June 27th, 2008

New York City’s Hard Rock Café hosted a press conference today, June 27, with a video sneak peak of “Guitar Hero: Aerosmith.” The entire band was present for the preview before the game hits shelves on Sunday, June 29, 2008. It will be released for Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 2 and 3.

The game will feature songs from the band’s repertoire that spans four decades. Initially, players will begin as guitarist Joe Parry and work their way up to guitarist Brad Whitford and bassist Tom Hamilton, as well as more prestigious venues. Steven Tyler spent two weeks in a rubber suit to animate himself for the game to make sure is was “all that Aerosmith is.” This is the fourth installment of the popular game and the first to feature a specific band. “Guitar Hero: World Tour” is also set to release in October of this year and the release date of “Guitar Hero: Metallica” is yet to be announced. Battles – Mirrored

June 25th, 2008

A Beautiful Rainbow

Music without conventional vocals scares people for the same reason that classical music bores them. Usually both types of records consist of a few long winded songs which aren’t apparently “”about”" anything, making the record on the surface seem homogenous. Furthermore, the absence of the human voice is disconcerting to some listeners as though the music wasn’t made by real people. Battles and their first LP Mirrored are quite different. Read more…

The Big Sleep – Sleep Forever

June 25th, 2008

Wake-Up Call

The time is ripe for new kings of alternative music to be born. With the controlling forces of the music industry resurrecting and latching onto revered trailblazers (The Pixies, My Bloody Valentine, Gang of Four), and few new heavyweights emerging despite a veritable avalanche of hype and press coverage (TV on the Radio, Bloc Party, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!) the valid question becomes: what’s more important, explosive popularity or enduring quality? New York’s The Big Sleep might be one such new king. Their sophomore release Sleep Forever is a triumph, as rewarding as it is replayable.
