Einstürzende Neubauten’s Jewels

May 31st, 2008

Not exactly a B-Sides and rarities compilation, Einstürzende Neubauten’s Jewels explores the band’s hidden niches. Work on Jewels, being released in the U.S. this Summer on the band’s Potomak label (distributed by Ryko), began at the same time as work on Alles Wieder Offen (2007). Interestingly, the band played a card game called DAVE prior to each Jewels recording. The game, based on Tarot but without the rules, involved each player drawing a couple cards and attempting to make sense of them. After drawing the cards, the players would retreat to the vaulted cellar of the studio and return yielding shopping carts full of stuff from which ideas were made. While secrecy about one’s cards had to be maintained, the end result was to surprise and, in turn, be surprised.

Track-listing:

Witch – Paralyzed

May 30th, 2008

Witch Not Paralyzed With New Album

Witch is no ‘indie metal super-group’ or side project. To prescribe such journalistic stigmas would be to underestimate the commitment of its members. After their self-titled debut in 2006, Witch has returned with their sophomore album, Paralyzed. It remains true to their classic heavy rock sound but has evolved as the band has learned to play to each other’s strengths. Read more…

Daft Punk Recording Album No. 4

May 29th, 2008

Daft Punk has been one of the most talked-about artists of the last 2 years. The surprising thing is that it wasn’t for an album. While their epochal Coachella performance resulted in Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo taking their pyramid show on the road, it was the tour that inspired their hugely successful Alive 2007 album.

Now, according to former manager Pedro Winter, “The boys are in a studio in Paris at the moment and I can’t wait to listen to their new stuff.” While claiming that the best thing is that they’re making music, he also explained that he stepped down as their manager in order to focus on his label, Ed Banger Records (home to Justice) and his own career as Busy P.

There is no title for the follow-up to 2005’s Human After All and no release date. Read more…

Johnny Rotten to Britney Spears’ Rescue?

May 29th, 2008

“I haven’t written a song for Britney yet but I would love to. I’d like to help out because there’s a girl who needs some help. She’s been hurt. And hurt is the root core essence of good music.”

These are the words of punk/post-punk pioneer and innovator John Lydon, AKA Johnny Rotten. The former Sex Pistols frontman empathizes with the rapidly-falling pop star and insists he could give her career a boost. Spears has had a tough year with custody battles over her kids, hospitalization and management issues and the man who howled “god save the queen” wants to help turn it around.
