RIP: James Brown
It seems that 2006 will close on a note of sadness. At 1:45 on Christmas Day, the world lost one of the most influential figures in music over the last fifty years, James Brown. Known by many as the Godfather of Soul, The Hardest Working Man in Show Business, Soul Brother Number One, and a slew of other nicknames, Brown was hospitalized with pneumonia on December 24th.
James Brown certainly left one formidable legacy behind. With hit singles like “I’ve Got You (I Feel Good)”, “Say It Loud–I’m Black and I’m Proud”, “(Get Up I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine”, “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag” and “Please, Please, Please” as well as some of the most energetic live albums in recorded history, he will forever be often imitated and never duplicated. Bubblegum Sweetness
Though Leigh Nash has been in the music business 15 years, she still manages to convey an innocence that belies her longevity. Her distinctive, angelic voice makes her easily recognizable as the former front-woman of Sixpence None the Richer. Blue on Blue, her pop-influenced solo release, is a little more soulful than her previous work; however, the mature tracks don’t negate the slightly syrupy ones. Read more…

Danger Mouse Goes 2-D
Adding to his mostly conjested plate, Danger Mouse will be at the helm of a band who’s members are brought to life through animated characters. Dubbed The Undergroung Animals, the collective will contain “an element of mystery,” says Downtown label head Josh Deutsch. “We have some very celebrated producers and some up-and-comers, all of whom are arranged around Danger. Everybody is producing under a pseudonym.”
Danger Mouse is currently working Gnarls Barkley’s follow-up to the highly acclaimed St. Elsewhere, which is due before the end of 2007. Read more…
